Simple laminar dynamos

چکیده
Key words magnetic fields – magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) Although current interest in astrophysical dynamo theory is largely focussed on flows with both large-and small-scale motions, historically the study of dynamos driven by laminar flows has been important. Some classical laminar flow dynamos are reviewed. These results were obtained in an asymptotic regime corresponding to small values of system parameters. Numerical simulations have since been used to extend these results outside of these asymptotic regimes; the asymptotic results remain useful approximations well outside of their formal regions of validity. By changing slightly the system geometries some interesting new results have recently been obtained The latter include the very simple " one-roll " dynamo, with motions in a single meridional cell contained within a spherical volume of fluid, without differential rotation.

Simple laminar dynamos: from two rolls to one
The study of laminar flows with simple streamlines in conducting fluids that might support kinematic dynamo action has a long history. Early successful examples include the Gailitis (1970) dynamo, which has two meridional rolls. We show here that a single meridional roll, considered as a limit of a modified Gailitis-like dynamo, can also support kinematic dynamo action in a deep spherical shell...
متن کاملFast Reconnection of Magnetic Fields in Turbulent Fluids
Reconnection is the process by which magnetic fields in a conducting fluid change their topology. This process is essential for understanding a wide variety of astrophysical processes, including stellar and galactic dynamos and astrophysical turbulence. To account for solar flares, solar cycles, and the structure of the galactic magnetic field, reconnection must be fast, propagating with a spee...
متن کاملSaturation properties of the Archontis dynamo
This paper discusses the generation and subsequent non-linear limiting of magnetic fields by motions in a periodic flow driven by a force whose components are proportional to (sin z, sinx, sin y). This problem was originally studied by Archontis (2000); the purpose of the present work is to remove certain complications present in the original model in order better to understand the underlying p...
متن کامل-effect dynamos with zero kinetic helicity
A simple explicit example of a Roberts-type dynamo is given in which the effect of mean-field electrodynamics exists in spite of pointwise vanishing kinetic helicity of the fluid flow. In this way, it is shown that -effect dynamos do not necessarily require nonzero kinetic helicity. A mean-field theory of Roberts-type dynamos is established within the framework of the second-order correlation a...
